Black Square Cloudcast “Ignis Sacer”

Чёрный квадрат

« Black Square netlabel is about synthesis between image and a sound, music and a photo. And as Malevich’s square it does not recognise genre distinctions as in music so in photography, but represents only Suprematism: “the supremacy of pure feeling.” — About: Black Square »

Ian Hawgood “The Smallest Caravan”

From the 12rec. netlabel release Enfants Ruraux

« Ian Hawgood, international man of mystery. Mr. Hawgood is a hard-working musician, with an impressive oeuvre spread over a dozen of quality record labels. While his Koen Park moniker is about IDM - and Hip Hop influenced Electronica, the music he publishes under his civil name can roughly be classified as Ambient, Drone and Noise. His “The Fires Will Die At Night” at Resting Bell Netlabel is legend already.

For 12rec., Ian Hawgood delivers an album completely recorded with analog instruments. His most subtle and personal up to date. As the title depicts it, “Enfants Ruraux” is a journey into his childhood when little Ian was nearly deaf; he got obsessed by simple tones and melodies in these days. On the one hand, “Enfants Ruraux” is a meditation on the elementary sound of the piano and the acoustic guitar. Hawgood is happy to be blessed with a musical family and circle of friends who lent pump organ, chimes, violins, trumpets and loads of other stuff for further investigation. — 12rec. »

VorteX (Mix for X-Rated)

Ambientblog “VorteX (Mix for X-Rated)”

VorteX was especially mixed for X-Rated: a weekly three hour radio show on the Dutch alternative music radio channel Kink FM

« Since 1995, X-Rated (a weekly three hour radio show on Dutch alternative music radio channel Kink FMhas been a “platform for ‘difficult’ music”. Experimental, avant-garde, poetry, soundscapes: uncensored and uncompromised. (The FM in the channel’s name is somewhat misleading, since it’s a cable radio station that can also be received via internet or satellite).

X-Rated’s existence for more than 15 years is nothing short of remarkable, because Kink FM (daughter of Veronica Broadcasting company) is a commercial station, while the music X-Rated features is about the opposite of “commercial”. Since Dutch public radio has ended (almost) all of the experimental radio shows, X-Rated is about the last Dutch program hosting experimental electronic music. — Peter van Cooten · Ambientblog.net »

Slow “Smiling Silence Mix”

From the Play My Tape podcast Smiling Silence

« Sergey Suokas is a man from Russia, Karelia. Moving from town to town he was writing lovely ambient as Slow. (As an aside, one of my favourite releases of the year thus far has to be Slow’s Strange Dreams out on the Passage Music netlabel).

Solo projects: freaky minimal techno as Suokas, atmospheric abstractionism and ambient as Slow, ear-friendly and melodic electronic music as Hot Arctic. Collaborations: music for the silent movie as Electron Hemisphere (with Mental Overdrive and Aggie Peterson), ambient electronica as Feldmaus (with Modul trio).

Growing up in Petrozavodsk, Russia, Sergey Suokas began writing and recording music as a teenager. DJing at raves in Moscow, he made enough contacts to land a recording contract with English minimal techno labels. Various EPs were released under his Suokas stage name since 2007 until he had enough material to compile his album, “Liveact @ Solyanka”, which was heralded as a major step forward in Russian minimal techno music.

Well-received albums were recorded and released through 2008 under alias Slow. During winter 2009 he recorded a soundtrack for the silent movie “Mother” with Mental Overdrive and Aggie Peterson as Electron Hemisphere. He has also produced a few minor works under the alias Hot Arctic. Nowadays Sergey is doing nothing. This is really hard work. — sergeysuokas.ru »

Marcus Fischer “Arctic 3”

From the LuxusArctica Records netlabel release Arctic/Antarctic

« Marcus Fischer, otherwise known as “mapmap” or through his blog dustbreeding.com, has spent the last months collecting excellent field recordings using contact mics and other methods to create some of the most unique sounds that allow us to explore more closely the music in nature. Arctic/Antarctic is an amazing exposition of aural-ganic analyzing, synthesizing, and abstraction generation.

The following are Marcus’ notes on the album:

“Arctic/Antarctic is centered around a series of guitar based improvisations. The first half, Arctic, consists of the gradual folding and unfolding of melodies played on guitar and sustained through the use of a custom designed granular delay plugin. The asynchronous delayed notes are pitched both up and down resulting in organ-like textures. Layered atop portions of Arctic there are the playful sounds of hail on the exposed tines of a toy piano.

The first 1/3 of the Antarctic portion is based on the slow shifting of loop points within a larger guitar loop. The rest of Antarctic contrasts with prior sections. Rather than using digital processes, this portion relies only on loops created using a system of modified analog cassette tapes. These cassettes were played back and rerecorded at a distance capturing some of the surrounding sounds such as cats moving about the room and hints of nearby construction.” — LUXX »

Brokenkites “Uplift”

From the Hollow Scene netlabel release No Sun So Brightly Shines

« I’ve never seen the world outside - but for most of my life, the Arc’s seemed much too small. When I was younger, I walked the entire perimeter of the stasis field more than a few times, searching the barrier for something, anything, that might prove to be an exit, but it was futile and depressing work that drained my hope. There’s not a lot of real hope left in the Arc; these days, it’s worn down, dull, and faded, and most everybody pretends to have it while they wait to see if the centennial brings about the end of the world.

If the world ends, we do escape, but what happens after that? Can we survive, brave as we are, in the old world outside? I fear that we’ve grown far too complacent in our years here: the small pockets of innovators are far outnumbered by the greater mass of individuals who’ve believed in something for so long that they can no longer function properly without it. What if the world outside doesn’t greet us with open arms? What if there are no arms present to greet us at all? — Brokenkites on Last.fm »
