Ryonkt “Colour and Form”

From the Lunarflower netlabel release, All the Things Which I See

As I listen to All the Things Which I See by Ryonkt, I see a snowflake from its origin of up in the clouds slowly drifting through a light gray sky to finally resting in a pure white blanket of untouched snow. I see an unmanned sailboat floating gently across a calm ocean. I see the faint heartbeat of a newborn chic. I see a tiny waterfall on a lost city street from a gentle rain shower. I see a drifting cloud, not a dark one, but one of a light gray.

This is the wonder of subtlety, Lunarflower is proud to present this five-song masterwork by Japanese artist Ryonkt.

Fluid Radio writes, “Ryo Nakata, aka Ryonkt based in Sapporo, Japan creates soft spoken ambient music with his guitar and computer. Ryo also operates the Slow Flow record label. His previous releases can be found on labels such as Noise-Joy, Dog Eared, Resting Bell, Audiotalia, and Smallfish.”

Astrowind “Nebel”

From the netlabel Resting Bell release, Kurland

It seems like Astrowind - Tulo/Bukimi - are having the most constant release-frequency on Resting Bell. One release a year, always around September and October.  It is the third release on Resting Bell, after Somewhere The Music Had Been Played in September 2007 and Der Leuchtturm in October 2008.  They also released on 12rec and Electrosound/Musica Excentrica.

Kurland contains 15 pieces and has a total duration of over 60 minutes, a real longplayer. Kurland is the German name for one of the cultural and historical regions of Latvia (in English: Courland). So you have scenic titles like Kurland, Nebel, Sounds Of The Shores but also pieces about aerospace and deep sea. Compared to the older Astrowind-releases the new work sounds a bit deeper and adult. You still find the synth-drones and the noises and glitches but everything is arranged very focused, very sublime. Every element is set very sensible and well chosen.

Fjordne “Passing the Blue”

From the SEM/IOD release Light Passing on Through the Layer

Fjordne is Shunichiro Fujimoto.  Shunichiro Fujimoto says: “light passed on through the layer” is another look into to the depth of my electro-acoustic atmospheres.  The two tracks “To the surface” and “Passing the blue” together make a soundtrack of the flow of water in deep sea. —IOD

The piano that makes itself heard through “To the Surface,” by Tokyo-based musician Fjordne, alternates back and forth between being a full, sensuous presence and playing a game of digital hide’n’seek. The chords and individual notes are luscious — yet often as not, they come to the listener partially broken, whether flitting between the two speakers (or ears, if you’re in headphone mode), or as a result of Fjordne’s softly glitching electronic mediation, which renders the tones in fragments and slivers. The melody here functions like elements appearing in memory — thus, even as the piece moves forward, its individual parts have the aspect of things being tentatively recalled

“Passing the Blue,” the other piece on Fjordne’s recent IOD netlabel release, Light Passed On Through the Layer, is more deliberately song-like. A slow, deeply watery melodic line traces its way through echoing chambers, reminiscent at times of Harold Budd’s work with Cocteau Twins. Especially impressive is the slowly building sense of compositional development that occurs during the course of the piece’s nine and a half minutes. —Disquiet

Simon James French “Shame”

From the Hibernate Records’ 3in CD, Anthem

Simon makes sound art, field recordings, and other things.  He is also one half of The Radiolo Show, a podcast series that he and his good friend Giles curate.

surfdom · plunder · misery · falsehood · shame

Daniel Crossley writes recently in a Fluid Radio review, “It would seem that the label can do no wrong at the moment producing stunning releases time after time. This is clearly the case with Simon’s project, as each composition resonates a deep atmospheric feel, capturing a timeless soundscape of the highest order.

With it’s orchestral like environment of exploration and wonder, ‘Anthem‘ demonstrates Simon’s expertise within the realms of experimental soundscapes. You immediately sense his ability to allow each track time and space to breath without ever needing to ‘over do’ things, a technique commonplace throughout.

This is never more evident than in the stand out track ‘Misery‘; never overreaching, never trying too hard to overstate, flawlessly encapsulating an eerie gothic feel along the lines of Jacaszek’s creations.  ‘Anthem’ delievers ghostly digital portraits with it’s low organ tones and treated sounds…  an exceptional debut album from the talented artist that would be a great addition to any music connoisseur’s collection.” 9/10 —Fluid Radio Album of the Week

His EP Anthem is available for purchase right now on Hibernate Records in a limited edition of 100. For a modest £5.99 (incl. P&P) you can get your hands on a beautifully packaged 3” CD with 5 tracks of wonderful drones, field recordings and textures.  You may also preview and purchase Anthem digitally on BandCamp.

Electricwest “Goddess (Celer Mix)”

From netlabel Archaic Horizon, R3MIXES, a bonus album accompanying the re-release of Electricwest’s MOTH3R

After a three track sampler and a pay per download release on Rope Swing Cities, AH is re-releasing Electricwest’s ‘MOTH3R’ along with a bonus album.  ‘R3MIXES’ reinterprets the album’s 11 songs through 11 different artists, including Electricwest himself. It features a mix of ambient drones to start the album off, flowing gradually into more beat-oriented, dub and idm.

‘MOTH3R’ stands strong on its own, with Electricwest’s familiar rumbling bass and haunting tones invigorated from their own distortions. Disembodied voices become embedded within the dissonance and unearthed in the melodies. The album confronts listeners with a polarity between dark, anxious and crawling sonics against more calm and optimistic moments.

Extended thanks to all artist involved in ‘R3MIXES’ and to those who purchased ‘MOTH3R’ upon its original release.

Morgan Craft “The Streets Moved to Destinations”

From the Clinical Archives netlabel release, The Silver Bullet

Q: You’ve said before that every instrumentalist must discover the infinity within their instrument, what do you mean?

MC: Every instrument must be exploded, atomized and seen for what it truly is. If you accept that sound, not only the twelve tones of our western system, but the entire world of sound, can be used for communication and expression then you must discover the point at which your instrument liquefies.

All sounds made by, on, or through solo electric guitar, with the exceptions of tracks 1 & 11 which are field recordings. All tracks improvised and recorded live.

Morgan Craft is from New Brighton, Minnesota.  He moved to New York in 1994.  He founded Circle Of Light Recordings in 2001.  He has played with Butch Morris, Talib Kweli, Pete Cosey, Ikue Mori, Meshell Ndegeocello, Anton Fig, Beans, Greg Osby, Rhodri Davies, Johnny Kemp, Marc Ribot, Christian Marclay, Simon H. Fell, Nona Hendryx, Carl Hancock Rux, Daniel Carter, Vernon Reid, Greg Tate.  He currently lives in a mountain villa in Toscana, Italia.
